"Adventures in Fossil Collecting:

Arizona & Beyond

Presented by Dr. Jeff Langland

Thursday, April 20, 2023

7.30 pm Arizona time.

Our April 20th program will be presented by MSA Life Member Dr. Jeff Langland.  Jeff's talk will focus on various sites and specimens from Arizona that have produced many museum quality fossils.  As a field collector, Jeff is always looking for new sites to explore.  Jeff will discuss fossil collecting sites and specimens he has collected not only from Arizona, but from various sites throughout the United States and even out of the country.  As a long-time field collector, Jeff will show the value, fun, and excitement in personally finding your own specimens.

Jeff is the son of Leo and Barbara Langland who were long-time members of the Mineralogical Society of Arizona serving as President and Editor, The Rockhound Record bulletin.  His father, Leo, was a geologist for for the Arizona Department of Transportation and as such, Jeff was raised going out into the field every other weekend exploring various mines and collecting sites in Arizona including the Rowley mine, Glove mine, and Red Cloud mine collecting excellent mineral specimens as well as discovering unique and exciting fossil sites.  Although Jeff did not become a geologist himself, his exposure to collecting as a child became part of his life and has been collecting in Arizona and beyond for the past 50 years.  As a husband and father, Jeff has exposed his family to the exciting world of field collecting and how nature can be a bonding experience.  Some of Jeff's fondest memories are going with his family to the Red Cloud mine every Thanksgiving, collecting wulfenite and then his mom setting up an elaborate turkey dinner at the campsite.

Professor Jeff Langland, Ph.D., received his doctorate degree from Arizona State University (ASU) in the area of virology in December 1990. After graduating from ASU, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California Davis and the University of Wyoming. In 1995, he returned to ASU as an Assistant Professor. In 2007, Jeff became a Professor at the Sonoran University of Health Sciences as the instructor for Medical Microbiology and Immunology.

Mark your calendars and register as Mineralogical Society of Arizona is excited for a terrific program by our own MSA Life Member Dr. Jeff Langland!
