MSA Mineral Collection

By Chris Whitney-Smith, Curator MSA Mineral Collection

The MSA has had a mineral collection from its beginning, and MSA 1964 President Bob Jones recalls a hurried journey to Bisbee in the late 1960's with group of MSA members to accept a donation of what has become the core of the MSA collection.

Key Arizona specimens of the MSA collection were featured in the Mineral Collections in Arizona (May-June 2013) and (January-February 2020) supplement issues of The Mineralogical Record.

MSA signs 10 year loan agreement with UA Gem & Mineral Museum good through November 30, 2024.  Several MSA collection specimens are on exhibit at University of Arizona Gem and Mineral Museum in Tucson.

The collection was on a special exhibit at University of Arizona Gem & Mineral Museum January-December 2014 as part of The Best of the Best, Prize Minerals from the Vaults of Arizona's Collectors and at the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show February 12-15 2015.

Bob Jones donated MSA's original display case back to MSA summer 2020, providing opportunity for key specimens of MSA Collection to be a featured exhibit at Pinal Geology and Mineral Museum in Coolidge beginning in Fall 2020.

Visit University of Arizona Gem & Mineral Museum in Tucson and check out the many terrific collections on exhibit.
